About the Author

Denise Theresa Haynes has lived many lives, each chapter adding depth to the stories she would one day tell.

Her career journey has been as diverse as it is rich: from a flight attendant with British West Indian Airways and an advertising clerk at the Trinidad Guardian, to a tutor, teaching assistant, and college lecturer for close to a decade. She later served as a Spanish interpreter for the Magistrates Court and Court of Appeal in Bridgetown, Barbados, before spending 18 years in private legal practice, from which she began retiring in 2024.

But long before any of these roles, she carried a quiet dream to become a writer.

It wasn’t until the stillness of the pandemic, when distance separated her from family across Barbados, Trinidad, Venezuela, and the United States, that she finally gave herself the space to write. In that time of reflection, Talent Show began to take shape, a story she came
to realize she had been preparing to write all her life. Fragments of it had lived quietly in her thoughts for years, waiting for the right moment to come together.

Now, in her 60s, she has published her debut novel – a lifelong dream fulfilled.

Signs of her writing talent appeared years earlier, when she was a runner-up in the Commonwealth Bureau’s Short Story Competition in 1999, and through articles published in magazines and journals.

Born and raised in Trinidad as the youngest of ten children, her experiences of family life have deeply shaped her storytelling. Today, she lives in St. Peter, Barbados, where she continues to write and reflect on the many layers of human connection.

“Because it’s never too late to tell your story.”

Why This Book Matters

Talent Show is a reflection of real life, where no two people experience the same moment in the same way.

It speaks to anyone who has ever felt misunderstood, unseen, or curious about the deeper stories within their own family. It invites you to pause, reflect, and consider the perspectives around you… and within you.

Inspired in part by the vibrant culture of talent shows. especially those widely loved in Trinidad during the 1970s and 1980s, this story draws on a familiar idea: people from all walks of life stepping forward to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

In many ways, a family is its own kind of talent show. Everyone is searching for their moment to shine, to express themselves, to be understood. In a household as large and dynamic as the one in this novel, each voice carries its own truth, its own performance, its own story.

Inside The Book

A Glimpse Inside

“As they grew up, like all children, they sensed her weaknesses and used them to their advantage. They tested her and came to know that she was fallible and just another human inhabiting the earth and working her way through life. Still, old habits die hard, and somewhere in them there was always a need to obey and respect her, even after they were men and women.

But I know her as my Suzy. I knew a version of her that existed before the children came along. I knew her as a buxom 16-year-old, with a ready smile and a laugh that could raise the dead, I knew her when. I knew a person they never knew, who ceased to exist when she became a mother, and whom I only glimpsed occasionally once she gave birth to the first of our children.”

Step into a world where every voice matters, and every perspective reveals something new. If this story speaks to you, this is your invitation. Discover a book that will stay with you long after the final page.
